International Women’s Group Celebrates African Cultural Day
16 April 2019: The International Women’s Group organized a colorful and fun-filled “African Cultural Day” event on Tuesday, 16 April 2019, at Al Jawhara Ballroom in the Crown Plaza Hotel Farwaniya. Mrs Rima Al Khaldi, wife of the Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Kuwait and Vice President of the Group, opened with a speech on behalf of the Group’s President, Mrs Clethe Gubler, and then welcomed the Honorary President HE Sheikha Anwar Al Sabah who then welcomed the Ambassadors, the IWG members and all guests. HE Mr Tareq Al-Koni, Ambassador of Egypt to Kuwait and the President of the African Union, was also present and gave an enticing speech that grabbed everyone’s attention.
Part of the celebrations included a video of the famous singer Miriam Makiba, a South African Grammy Award singer and human rights activist carrying the title of African mother. President Mandela said she endured the pain of being in exile for 31 years and yet her music gives us a deep sense of hope.
The continent of Africa is the second largest continent and is full of great wonders such as the sands of the race of the youth in Morocco and a natural garden of the sand in Mauritania; a volcanic group in Tanzania and a Mount Table in South Africa, There are also the Victoria Falls in Zambia, the Great Mosque of Mali, the Pyramids of Giza and, of course, the Great Nile River. Moreover, the continent includes the Coral Island of Seychelles, Lake Turkana in Guinea, Massive Basins in Botswana, the Maltese Rock in Madagascar, the Archaeological Churches of Eritrea and the Kingdom of Great Rocks of Zambia.
The steak restaurant brought in and African band that performed live and created an exciting atmosphere with their drumbeats. To add to the experience, a coffee house offered true Kenyan coffee beans to all guests.
Throughout the ballroom, there were images on display that show different cultural backgrounds and heritages. A table with different instruments and African items was generously presented by Burkina Faso. There was a corner for the African turbans, also called the Arab Tijan, and another for African face paints and a lovely forest.
The IWG Board and members bid farewell to Mrs Hazel Bona, wife of the Ambassador of South Africa, on the occasion of their departure and the end of their duties in the State of Kuwait. She said that the time spent in Kuwait was one of the most important stages that she would not forget and thanked the State of Kuwait and its distinguished people for their generosity.
IWG members and guests ended the lovely morning with great raffle prizes and an authentic taste of African cuisine.
